There are various regulations for each province, but in general, Canadians can avail themselves of all the major forms of gambling, including casinos (commercial, tribal and charitable), lotteries, pari-mutuel wagering, single-event and parlay sports betting, online gaming and charitable gaming. The gaming industry saw significant growth during the 1990s, when provincial governments began legalizing permanent casinos and VLTs. For some time, only parlay betting on sports was legal, with singlegame sports betting banned at the federal level. In 2012, the House of Commons passed legislation that would allow betting on single games.
